“In modern times, we are quick to "throw the rascals out," but it never occurs to us that rascality is imbedded in the office or that the power invested in it might make a rascal of an honest man.”     Frank Chodorov,    What Samuel Said about Solomon

Quotes from Reagan

by Eric

Ronald Reagan had a way of asking important questions in ways that people understood. Here’s three on the government’s power to tax.

Are you entitled to the fruits of your labor or does government have some presumptive right to spend and spend and spend?

Clearly George W. Bush has not listening to the Reagan/Goldwater wing of the Republican Party. Just because he cut taxes doesn’t mean we don’t have to pay for the spending. It just means we are deferring pay for it to another day.

Have we the courage and the will to face up to the immorality and discrimination of the progressive tax, and demand a return to traditional proportionate taxation? … Today in our country the tax collector’s share is 37 cents of every dollar earned. Freedom has never been so fragile, so close to slipping from our grasp.

Don’t you ever wonder why the actually wealthy folks in this country don’t want to get rid of progressive taxation?

The federal government has taken too much tax money from the people, too much authority from the states, and too much liberty with the Constitution.

The best one sentence summation of the Federal government from 1936 to the present I’ve ever read!

Have you seen Oprah’s recent comments on the guilt of the wealthy? I think the wealthy friend in her anecdote is one who would not want to get rid of progressive taxation. And I think too many wealthy Americans are like that.

  2. THat is true Wulf. But, there are plenty of other wealthy folks (John Kerry’s wife comes to mind) who appear, at least to an outside observer, to know how to manipulate progressive taxation to their own advantage.

  3. And so long as they can manipulate it, why would they bother getting rid of the current system?

The guilty and the greedy like it. That is probably a majority of the wealthy.

  4. That’s my point. When the Left talks about how the wealthy don’t “pay their fair share”, they never realize it is precisely because the system the Left has created is tailor made to manipulation by the wealthy.

You don’t fix that by creating a more progressive tax system.
