Eric,

What value does a quota on immigration bring to the table?

So the immigrants come here in manageable numbers so they can be assimilated and more importantly be able to get jobs. Also, the quotas would only apply to unskilled immigrants, not skilled or even semi-skilled immigrants who wouldn't even be subjected to quotas nor would political and religious refugees of any skill level. Finally, 500,000 is a reasonable number for the construction and agricultural industries to be supplied with workers. We can look to, instead of a guest worker, a sojourner agreement that allows for open travel between Mexico and the United States for citizens of either country for those who want to work in America only temporarily.

We are the only country in history (that I know of) that has turned migration patterns into a plus.

By imposing quotas (which staggered out the migration patterns over decades) and using health screenings to stop those with contagious diseases at places like Ellis Island. Terrorism was not even fathomed of back then.

We should view anyone who wants to come here as an American. Anything less leads to the multi-culture problems that Europe is experiencing right now.

Which is why I oppose guest worker programs because they create a second-class designation of residents with no hope of citizenship or opportunity to better their lives.

Brad,

I agree with almost everything you're saying on immigration reform, including the limited amnesty; but I disagree with your proposal of a guest worker program.

All a guest worker program will do is create a permanent, unassimilated, underclass of people who will be poorer than most Americans and less skilled than most Americans and envious of Americans. This will lead to the riots and other problems that France and other European countries are experiencing with their Muslim minorities.

Instead, we should set an overall quota (about 500,000 a year just to throw out a number) for unskilled immigrants to enter the US with a clear road to citizenship by following the law and learning English and about this country (and abolish quotas for skilled workers, political refugees, religious refugees, and other persecuted peoples around the world).

Adam,
I agree that the actions of the protestors are abhorrent. They're not advocating for a guest worker program, they're advocating that we simply ignore the fact that they don't respect our laws. They are telling us they're above our law, and that won't win them any friends in this country. One of my biggest fears is that we, as a country, will use the political backlash to make our immigration system even less sensible.

Brock - I think you're right - and that again highlights a difference. When the US becomes a totalitarian police state, we, who've taken so much liberty for granted, have no where else to go, so change has to be effected from the inside out. Unfortunately, our love of freedom has lead us in too many ways to embrace those who would violate our laws to escape untenable situations in their own country rather than banding together to effect change themselves in the monster that *they* and *their* ancestors were responsible for creating.

I'm not advocating a carte blanche sending back of all illegals - while a part of me might like that, I realize it's an unrealistic thing to even fathom. But I do think that we should definitely deport those who have been convicted of crime, and stop immediately any governmental benefits to anyone not in this country legally. That would go a long way toward determining who *really* wants to live here - and who are just here for what they can get.

"We have to enforce our laws, but when our laws are contrary to the very fabric of America, those laws need to change."

Exactly! Enforce the laws. Tax the people, print the money, finance the debt, do whatever it takes to enforce the laws on the books. Enforce the laws regardless of circumstance or individual status. Establish the police state they want.

I firmly believe the fastest path to regaining liberty is to (at least with our voices) demand STRICT law enforcement, including allocating the funds to enforce the laws on the books. No legislative action needed; they've already done that work. All we need to do is demand the enforcement to show how ludicrous their nanny-esque, technocrati, facist, totalitarianism is. Then, we will have the majority support required to repeal all (or all but the most basic) of this overreaching system and its bloated beauracracy.
