Mel Martinez’s office, if you remember, was the author of an infamous memo during the Terri Schiavo tragedy that gave talking points for Republicans to use on that issue. The Republicans do not do themselves a service with limited government voters by appointing a man who sought to use the tragedy and government intervention in the dispute of the Schiavo and Schindler families for political gain.
The liberals took over the GOP in 00. American looked the other way in 02 and 04 when we were told and we believed we would win the War on Terror. Nobody now believes we are going to win. Even the liberal Bush. As evidenced by his firing of Rummy and nominating a "cut and run" man from A+M to replace Rummy.
Without the war to distract the voters from the massive growth of the govt (over 61% since 00!) voters realized that today's liberals are the Republicans.

Reagan men (17 -21 depending on who you read) did win election to Congress in 06, with Jim Webb at the top of the list. But *all* Reaganm men were Democrats! The Regan Democrats have been attacked by Bush since Jan 05 and are fed up. They have gone back home. Most, like Webb, would rejoin the GOP if the liberal leadership were replaced. But that is not going to happen.
