Not only is our police culture corrupted, but so is our culture more generally. Over 30 years of the War on Drugs has left most of our citizens numb to the brutality that is our modern police forces. They answer charges of police abusiveness with statements like "it's dangerous for cops out there, they have to protect themselves" or "sometimes bad things happen, that doesn't mean we should stop fighting crime". Or, as Mike experienced, "too bad". As if the death of a man is no big deal, especially if he's been accused of a crime.

Never mind that the alleged criminal never had the opportunity to defend himself in court. As some folks I know might say, "well, that saved the taxpayers some money".

Never mind that it could easily have been the roommate that was accused of nothing. That, of course, would be a tragedy, but "these things happen" when you're dealing with crime, you see.

Never mind that the police are supposed to protect our rights. You see, these days their job is to bust non-violent drug criminals and protect themselves from the incredibly violent and well armed drug gangs that they created.
