Kevin,

Bush has always tried to tie Iraq into the War on Terror even though there was no real evidence prior to the invasion that Iraq had anything to do with al Qaeda or with September 11th.

Now, of course, the insurgency is aided by al Qaeda and terrorists across the Middle East in a situation reminiscent of what happened in Afghanistan after the Soviet invasion.

The biggest problem with the Iraq War's aftermath is that Bush has been it using to score political points. Bush decided to try and make Iraq safe for democracy so he can say the voters he's tried to make them safe (nevermind the wide open borders, the inept airport security, piss poor port security, and incompetant civil defense as demonstrated in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina). When given the opportunity to annihilate the major terrorist base in Fallujah in the Spring of 2004, Bush called off the Marines because he was afraid the casualties would hurt him in the fall elections. Now Bush is going to surge 30,000 troops with no clear mission, still no clear definition of victory, and no loosening of the rules of engagement in order to look like he's trying to fight in Iraq. If we want to try and salvage victory (it has to be defined first), we need to get the politics out of the war.
