“It is a truism that almost any sect, cult, or religion will legislate its creed into law if it acquires the political power to do so, and will follow it by suppressing opposition, subverting all education to seize early the minds of the young, and by killing, locking up, or driving underground all heretics.”     Robert A. I’m no friend of the state…

by Jason Pye

Apparently, the suits over at Fox News have given Sean Hannity his own television show called, Hannity’s America. According to Radley Balko over at Reason: Hit & Run, he has a segment called “Enemy of the State,” which he profiles some leftist or other known figure. Balko writes:

Sean Hannity will apparently end each episode of his new TV show by handing out an “Enemy of the State” award, which I gather is supposed to be a bad thing (there was a time when conservatives would have worn such a title with pride).

That’s a good point. What exactly is an enemy of the state? I don’t want to be a friend of the “state.” I want to live my life with as little interference from the government as possible, but Hannity makes it sound like it is bad to criticize our government or the current administration.

Granted there are people I see or hear and I don’t particular care for their opinions, especially on economic issues or the Second Amendment, but this country needs healthy debate over current issues…even if one is labeled as an “enemy of the state.”

There more on this in another post at Reason.

My point is…the government is not your friend…by it’s very nature it is an enemy to personal sovereignty and economic liberty. By the way, Hannity isn’t your friend either.

Also, in an article that appears in this month’s issue of Reason magazine, some of their contributors write about what they expect from a Congress controlled by Democrats. The article is a great read, especially the part written by Andrew Napolitano.

  4. The weird thing is that I think Hannity has a bit of an internal conflict. If you listen to his radio show, you’ll hear a slight libertarian streak in between his tirades genuflecting at the Republican altar. I had thought there might be hope for him, but this shatters that idea.

What I don’t get is apparently his first “Enemy of the State” was Sean Penn? Can’t you aim your sights a bit higher? How about Murray Rothbard, you can at least educate your viewers about someone who really wants to see the end of the state at the same time you demean their intelligence with this sort of lame label.
