As an analogy: people try to find a 'cure-all', a magic fix in a bottle, to fix their health problems, as it avoids the reality that good health is dependent on balance in several areas - diet, exercise, positive state of mind, etc.
Our environmental problems are no different. If everyone was driving a Prius we'd still have enormous problems. Does this mean we should stop promoting clean methods of transport? No at all. This, like any one component of a healthy regime for our physical ailments, needs to kept in perspective. There are many things that can be done to dramatically reduce our energy consumption.

There's about 200 people in the square mile I live in, but once you leave that square mile, there are probably about 30 people for every 20 square miles. There is a whole lot of nothing here south of the capitol, and even less if you go west. They don't put public transit out here...we only have one paved road. You can't even get to the highway without driving on gravel.

Mass transit may be ok in major cities or small countries (the transit system in Germany is very convenient), but it isn't even practical for most Americans. We really like living a half hour from anywhere. Here in the middle of nowhere where doing anything means driving somewhere : )
