The fact that there is another view to the story is a huge factor that was hardly possible before. I think it interesting how much differently you start looking at a news story when you start to pull excerpts and make comments. As you spoke of vitriolic trashing of others views, it expands to all sides. There is not enough civility to encourage debate. The people who actually go out and vote; who would seriously change government would not be attracted to a place where they could be beaten up in comments. I was told that to engage in discussion on blogs, I would have to have a thick skin. On blogs that I respect the bloggers the commenters have been vicious, so I have developed a smart mouth and a thicker skin. The only people you are going to effect will be the ones who already believe. This has been my experience for the short time, I have been on the net.
