Rudy Giuliani Does Not Believe In Small Government
by Doug MataconisThis is Rudy Giuliani circa 1989:
Let’s leave aside how you feel about the abortion issue to begin with. That’s not the problem with what he said. The problem is with the fact that he’s calling for taxpayer funding. Does he still support this position ? I don’t know, but, along with his record as Mayor of New York, it should be clear that Rudy Giuliani does not believe in limited government.

Comment by Kevin — March 12, 2007 @ 8:31 pmAnd this was what? 19 years ago.
Hell, Ronald Reagan was still a Democrat 19 years before he became the Republican Governor of California.
If this was 5 years ago, then you could slam him on it. But 19 years???
I see the Leftist Libertarian attack machine is already gunning for our guy Rudy.
Attack all you all want. Problem you have is that you will have NOBODY TO VOTE FOR in 2008.
What? You all going to support Steve “never been elected dog catcher” Kubby, or sour-puss George Phillies? Be my guest. My guess, either one of them will get less than Badnarik did in 2004.
Meanwhile we Libertarians for Giuliani will be in the winners circle, laughing at all you Losertarians.
Hah!
Comment by Eric Dondero — March 12, 2007 @ 10:32 pmYep. We at the vast left wing libertarian conspiracy is conspiring against Rudy because we all don’t realize we need Rudy to protect us and take care of us and be our national daddy.
Anybody but Rudy.
Giuliani will be beaten in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and the Super Tuesday states. He won’t even survive the Republican primaries.
Comment by Kevin — March 12, 2007 @ 10:54 pmAttack all you all want. Problem you have is that you will have NOBODY TO VOTE FOR in 2008.
You’re right. I’ll stay my ass home.
Comment by Brad Warbiany — March 12, 2007 @ 11:05 pmWhy not show that Giuliani knows better now instead of name calling?
Drudge had that video up and he is conservative.
Comment by uhm — March 13, 2007 @ 12:29 amEric,
I’m with Brad. I have no problem staying home if the choice I’m given comes down to Obama/Hillary/Al Gore vs. McCain/Giuliani/Romney
Comment by Doug Mataconis — March 13, 2007 @ 8:44 amStay home then. Sit out what will arguably be one of the most exciting Political Races of our lifetimes.
You’ll regret it.
My guess is that you all will make a valiant attempt to stay home on Election Day 2008. You’ll pace the floors of your living rooms, with CNN or Fox on in the background. Your wives will look at you with anger, or maybe even throw a mop at you all. And yell, Dammit! Just go down there an vote.
And y’all will jump in your little Volvos. Go to the polling place, and cast your votes for Rudy, so as to stop Hillary Clinton or worse HUSSEIN Obama, from being our next President.
Sure, you’ll huff, and puff, and try to be Libertarian Machos. But in the end, you’ll end up voting, and most of you WILL vote for Rudy.
Comment by Eric Dondero — March 13, 2007 @ 9:28 amEric,
You assume Giuliani will be the nominee.
A man who is pro-choice is not going to go over well in the conservative South and, quite frankly, I think his personal history is going to be a problem for many conservative Republicans.
And who says I will be sitting out the election ? Regardless of who the nominees are, I am sure I’ll have alot to say about the race here and elsewhere.
True confession time. I decided to ignore my doubts in 2000 I actually voted for Bush. Quite honestly, given his performance over the last six years, I am ashamed to say that I voted for him. I don’t intend on making that mistake again.
Comment by Doug Mataconis — March 13, 2007 @ 9:35 amYou know what must really drive you Rudy-skeptics crazy.
All this press Rudy is receiving, and all these mentions of him as a “libertarian,” “libertarian conservative,” or “libertarian Republican.”
I’ve been keeping a List of all Rudy mentions in the MSM as a “libertarian.” Let’s recap: London Times-Herald, Washington Post, Washington Times, NY Sun, LA Times, Chicago Tribune, National Review Magazine, Insight and American Spectator.
Now think about this for a second.
Do any of you all ever remember George W. Bush being called a “libertarian” by the MSM? Yes, it did happen one single time that I am aware of. In 2004, Jeff Birnbaum of Fortune Magazine on Fox News said of Bush, “he seems to be running a libertarian campaign of cutting government…” One single time.
Now, do any of you all ever remember Bob Dole the 1996 GOP Nominee ever being called a “libertarian”?
Answer – Never!
Anyone remember George Bush, Sr. being called a “libertarian” by the MSM back in 1992? 1988?
Ronald Reagan? Gerald Ford?
Yet, here we are 1 1/2 years out of the election, and Rudy Giuliani has been called a “libertarian” by just about every single major news outlet in the Nation, (save a few like Newsweek, Time, and CNN).
That is simply amazing!!! We should all be celebrating this fact. Instead, we’ve got a bunch of sourpusses like Doug Mataconis and Kevin, dumping water on the parade.
Hey sourpuss Libertarian set: Sometimes the grass is greener. How ’bout trying to see the glass half full instead of half empty. Lose that Losertarian attitude. Emphasize the positive, and stop looking for the negative all your lives. You might find yourself to be a little happier person.
If Giuliani is being identified as a “libertarian,” work with that. Get involved in his campaign and let others know you’re a libertarian and then start converting them to more hardcore libertarian positions.
You’d be doing a bunch more for liberty by doing that, then standing on the sidelines and bitchin’.
Comment by Eric Dondero — March 13, 2007 @ 9:37 amI’m with you Doug. I voted for Harry Browne in 2000, and am now extremely ashamed of my vote for him. He was an idiot, and an even worse Libertarian. I should have voted for Bush. At least he gave us a tax cut, and responded half-way hardcore to 9/11. I cannot imagine what Harry Browne would have done after 9/11. Probably signed some sort of Surrender Treaty with Al Qaeda.
Oh, and as far as “assuming Giuliani will the nominee.” I can only point to the latest polls, mostly all of them have him way out ahead and climbing.
And then this piece of breaking news. Rudy just picked up the endorsement of super-Conservative US Senator David Vitter of Louisiana.
And this interesting poll number. Rudy’s favorables in all Regions of the country ARE HIGHEST IN THE SOUTH!!! His favorable to unfavorable from Texas to Virginia to Florida are at 63% to 8%.
As Dick Morris suggests, Money is all that matters. Morris says Giuliani is the ONLY GOP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE to have enough money in the bank by September to win this race.
The only monkey wrench could be Fred Thompson. Save that, this race is Rudy’s to lose.
Comment by Eric Dondero — March 13, 2007 @ 9:43 amEric,
Just because the MSM is calling Giuliani a libertarian doesn’t mean that he is one.
The question is what does he actually believe about the relationship between the state and the individual ? What does he believe are the appropriate limits on the authority of law enforcement ? Where does he stand on medical marijuana ? Does he support or oppose McCain-Feingold ?
These, along with others, are the questions that matter. It doesn’t matter whether Katie Couric refers to Rudy as a libertarian or as a syndicalist. The label is meaningless without the substance.
Comment by Doug Mataconis — March 13, 2007 @ 9:44 amSorry, you’re dead wrong Mataconis. Image matters just as much important as issue stances. That’s the problem with you hardheaded Geeky Libertarian Purists. You’ll take anyone so long as they espouse the 100% correct Libertarian line.
There’s a lot more to electing a President than just issue-stances. How about Leadership? Especially important now in the time of War. How about sense of humor? How about looks? How about communication abilities? All, just as important a issue stances.
I want someone representing the Libertarian movement who is popular, well-liked, well-spoken and preferably good looking and with a sense of humor.
Rudy meets all those qualifications.
Comment by Eric Dondero — March 14, 2007 @ 4:25 pmEric,
You’re right. Image does matter. That’s why a man who cheated on his wife while in office and arranged for his mistress to live in Gracie Mansion isn’t going to have a very good image in the Bible Belt.
And you, quite obviously, still don’t get it. If Rudy Giuliani isn’t a libertarian in even the smallest respect — and I submit that he’s not — then his image doesn’t matter. If he’s going to govern like an authoritarian — which I submit he would — then why should I sacrifice my principles and vote for him ?
Enjoy promoting a candidate who believes in nothing.
