The Definition of An Earmark

by Kevin Boyd

During the Iraq Supplemental Bill debate, Congressman Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) was accusing the Democratic leadership of violating the House rules on earmarks. Check out the response by House Appropriations Committee chairman David Obey (D-Wisconsin).

I have absolutely no idea what just happened there. Jeff Flake (AZ) says that funding for a NASA center is an earmark. The guy from Wisconsin wants funding for a NASA center for hurricane mitigation? Is this center in Wisconsin? Did a hurricane form in the Great Lakes that I missed?

Nevermind, I looked it up. Stennis is in Louisiana and Obey is the Appropriations Committee Chair. So, is he allowed to just put money in whenever he feels like and for whatever he feels like?

I’ve got to admit, I like Flake, I would’ve voted for him in the election, but he was in the next district.

Actually Nick, Stennis is in Mississippi. About 10 minutes away from the Louisiana border.
