It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere

by Doug Mataconis

The United States Congress is well known for handing out money to many interest groups, including farmers, corporations, and, now, bartenders:

Do you own a bar? You should ask Congress for some money. They like handing out taxpayer dollars to bars, including:

  • $50,000 to the Antigua Tiki Bar & Grill in New Jersey
  • $12,500 to Baba Budan’s Espresso Bar in Ohio
  • $25,500 to the Barking Spider Bar & Grill in Minnesota
  • $7,500 to Akiyama Habachi & Sushi Bar in Colorado
  • $56,750 to the Bar-B-Que Pit in Alaska
  • $88,145 to the G-Spot Bar in Iowa
  • $127,500 to the Nite Owl Bar in Montana

The full list of lucky booze handlers can be found here.

  1. Doug, and with all that, you didn’t include a $635,000 payment to a bar in Massachusetts?

I’m sure Teddy Kennedy had nothing to do with that one!

(Actually, it was an SBA loan, so he probably didn’t…)

  2. C’mon, bartenders see a lot: how else can the government persuade them to keep their mouths shut?
