Michael Nifong Apologizes
by Doug MataconisDurham County District Attorney Michael Nifong has apologized to the members of the Duke lacrosse team who he had wrongly charged with rape:
DURHAM, North Carolina (AP) — The local prosecutor who charged three Duke lacrosse players with raping a stripper apologized to the athletes Thursday, acknowledging that the North Carolina attorney general’s decision to drop the case was correct.
“To the extent that I made judgments that ultimately proved to be incorrect, I apologize to the three students that were wrongly accused,” Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong said in a statement.
Because you know, I’m sorry makes up for the fact that he spent a year calling these guys rapists without any evidence to support it.

If by “made judgments” Nifong really means “willfully acted unethically to further my career, tarnished the reputation of the legal system, and tragically ruined your young lives in the process — and therefore am willing to do whatever is necessary to make ammends, up to and including any compensatory financial reimbursement deemed necessary” then maybe I’d consider his apology sincere.
