World Citizen,

I have actually never paid that much attention to Sea Shepherd. But, upon reading your comments, I decided to look around.

I found this:
http://www.highnorth.no/Library/Movements/Sea_Shepherd/se-sh-re.htm
The article chronicles people being harmed by the orginization.

Now, this compilation may be accurate or inaccurate.

Some of his quotes make it seem more likely to be accurate, as do quotes by others.

As Paul Watson states in his book, Sea Shepherd: My Fight for Whales and Seals, “To remain nonviolent totally is to allow the perpetuation of violence against people, animals, and the environment. The Catch-22 of it-the damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don’t dilemma-is that, if we eschew violence for ourselves, we often thereby tacitly allow violence for others, who are then free to settle issues violently until they are resisted, necessarily with violence.”

Scott Trimmingham, president of Sea Shepherd quits in protest. “We had rules about not hurting anyone, about not using weapons. I left because those rules and that philosophy seems to be changing,” he said to “Outside” magazine (Sept. 1991).

Books written in support of him, such as Earth Warrior, admit to ramming ships. While fatalities may not be involved, I am sure someone has been hurt at least once. But, again, I could be wrong.

Other quotes by Paul Watson seem... equally prepared to do violence:

“There are 30-million plus species on this planet. They’re all earthlings. They’re all equal. Some are more “equal” than others, I admit: earthworms are far more valuable than people.”
- Paul Watson “Animal Rights 2002” convention, 6/30/02

“There’s nothing wrong with being a terrorist, as long as you win. Then you write the history.”
- Sierra Club board member Paul Watson, at the Animal Rights 2002 convention,

“The fact is that we live in an extremely violent culture, and we all justify violence if it’s for what we believe in.”
- Paul Watson, at the Animal Rights 2002 convention,

“We should never feel like we’re going too far in breaking the law, because whatever laws you break to liberate animals or to protect the environment are very insignificant.”
- Paul Watson, at the Animal Rights 2002 convention

But just because I found these quotes does not mean that Watson ever hurt anyone. Maybe he has. Maybe he has not. But he has said he will not be pre-occupied by the chance of killing someone, and he feels that any violence done to protect animals is fine, even at the espense of human life.

And that's a fine view. But it's pretty hard to take that view and fit with:

To state the obvious to the ignorant, people who take action to protect endangered species of whales are generally the types who do not support killing people.

Actually, Sea Shepherd is obviously not for the killing of humans. To state the obvious to the ignorant, people who take action to protect endangered species of whales are generally the types who do not support killing people.
The person above who has written 'Save the planet! Kill the humans!' in relation to the Sea Sheperd article is obviously very ignorant.
Sea Shepherd have not harmed one person in the 20 years they have been around. They have been dedicated to saving life.
But hey, they make sure endangered mammals under protection of international conservation law are not harmed by illegal means. For some reason this threatens some people and they then have to try to slander them by making up pure undiluted CRAP.
Educate yourself before slandering good people. And maybe try getting on the right side while you're at it.

I'm a fan of the Rainbow Six response to people like this...after eco-terrorists tried to wipe out the population by unleashing a super-hemorrhagic fever virus on the world, they're tracked back to their jungle hideout. The good guys come in and neutralize their resistance. They strip the surviving eco-terrorists, blow up the compound and all supplies, and get set to fly out on their helicopters.

"But how will we survive?"

"You wanted to live with nature? Now's your chance. If you change your mind, civilization is about 100 miles through the jungle that way."
