Ron Paul’s Reading List

Ron Paul has given Rudy Giuliani a reading assignment:

“WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Longshot Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul on Thursday gave front-runner Rudy Giuliani a list of foreign-policy books to back up his contention that attacks by Islamic militants are fueled by the U.S. presence in the Middle East.

“I’m giving Mr. Giuliani a reading assignment,” the nine-term Texas congressman said as he stood behind a stack of books that included the report by the commission that examined the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.”

Okay, I don’t care what your political views are…this is pretty dang funny. A reading assignment. So how do you feel about Mr. Giuliani, Rep. Paul?

“I don’t think he’s qualified to be president,” Paul said of Giuliani. “If he was to read the book and report back to me and say, ‘I’ve changed my mind,’ I would reconsider.”

Mr. Giuliani, your response?

“A spokeswoman for Giuliani derided Paul’s latest comments.

“It is extraordinary and reckless to claim that the United States invited the attacks on September 11th,” Maria Comella said in an e-mail.

“And to further declare Rudy Giuliani needs to be educated on September 11th when millions of people around the world saw him dealing with these terrorist attacks firsthand is just as absurd.”

Judging by his comments (outlined by Kevin here) that “they hate us for our freedom,” I’d say that Mr. Giuliani could probably use a bit of an education. In case you were wondering what the books were:

Among the books on Paul’s reading list were: “Dying to Win,” which argues that suicide bombers only mobilize against an occupying force; “Blowback,” which examines the unintended consequences of U.S. foreign policy; and the 9/11 Commission Report, which says that al Qaeda leader
Osama bin Laden was angered by the presence of U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia.

Another book on the list was “Imperial Hubris,” whose author appeared at the press conference to offer support for Paul.

“Foreign policy is about protecting America,” said author Michael Scheuer, who used to head the CIA’s bin Laden unit. “Our foreign policy is doing the opposite.”

An interesting reading list. While I don’t agree wholeheartedly with the viewpoint of many of them, the only way we’re going to win this war is by stopping people from subscribing to the terrorists’ ideology in the first place. Mr. Giuliani’s simplistic “they hate us for our freedom/kill ’em all” rhetoric certainly isn’t going to do it.

As noted on Lew Rockwell’s blog. Rudy has made the mistake of responding to the comments of someone low in the polls. Don’t shoot up, shoot down.

It’s also interesting how they’ve yet to substantiate Rudy’s position.

  • Brad Warbiany

It may just be that this little exchange with Rudy is the best thing that could possibly happen to Ron Paul.

At the least, it’s the worst thing that could happen to Rudy. He’s started a fight that he didn’t need to enter, and he’s not fighting against someone over a political squabble, since Paul’s a true believer. There is no upside for Rudy on this one.

  • Doug Mataconis

Nice catch. I think its hilarious that Rudy Giuliani has basically succeeded in giving Ron Paul a lot of free(and somewhat sympathetic) media attention, while at the same time being made to look like a fool.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving fellow.

  • tarran

I think this is really Eric Dondero’s doing, that he’s decided to sacrifice himself and his reputation to get Ron Paul elected.

Think about it. Eric worked for Ron Paul for years. Then suddenly he joins the Giuliani camp and carrying water for them. Everywhere he goes, every chance he gets, he tells anyone willing to listen what a giant Giuliani is, and what a push-over Ron Paul is. He does this so offensively that people are moved to prove him wrong.

Why, I’m willing to bet that he even suggested to Giuliani or his aides that they issue that challenge in the debates.

Eric has motivated many people to dig into Giuliani’s past to publicize what a crap politician he is, while garnering sympathy for Dr Paul. I don’t think it is an accident.

The above was written with tongue firmly planted in cheek

  • UCrawford

I’m not all that optimistic about Ron Paul’s chances in the primary, and he’s hardly the most charismatic candidate in the race. But frankly he does seem to be gaining ground every time these issues and spats pop up.

Evaluating his position, in the GOP primary he’s the sole dissenter on the biggest issue (Iraq) and his remarks about are foreign policy (although not ideally worded) have more depth to them than any of the other candidates and are getting his name out there. Six months ago, no one knew who the guy was…now he’s actually getting his name in the press.

Plus, his remarks on foreign policy may be considered inflammatory and shocking now because it’s something no one else is saying…but in another few months, after people have had a chance to digest it, it’s entirely possible the shock factor will lessen the backlash he has experienced might soften. I’m curious to see if he can build on the momentum he appears to be gathering.

  • Drums of War

    Well then, Mr. Giuliani.

If “millions of people around the world saw (you) dealing with these terrorist attacks firsthand” how come you know so little about WHY the attacks happened in the first place?

Paul is right. Giuliani is NOT qualified to run anything larger than a city.

  • maria

You know, that really is Rudy’s attitude: kill ’em all. It’s a vigilante mentality, that we all understand post-9/11, but which is TOTALLY impractical.

It’s not that Rudy’s completely wrong when he says they hate us for our freedoms; of course that’s true for most of the fundamentalist Islamists (hey, it’s really true for many fundamentalist Christians as well!), but what tips people from hatred, to plotting a massacre as ambitious and monumental as 9/11 is much more comprehensive, deep-seated and overwhelming. And fighting them there (are we fighting them there? According to Bush, we’re trying to help a democracy form)isn’t gonna prevent those nutty ones from coming here again, it really isn’t. To assert as much is absurd. And to kill thousands of Americans in the process of trying to kill a fuzzy, elusive enemy is absurd, and to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians in the process is only increasing the numbers of extremists. We can’t attempt to combat terrorism through an attitude of obliteration; it just ain’t practical. But I think Rudy is incapable of respoding/thinking objectively about this because he’s probably suffering some PTSD from his experience. I think his personal experience of 9/11 makes him LESS qualified to fight the terrorists, in much the same way as the parent of a murdered child is not the one who should be on the jury of another murderer accused of killing a child (that’s why we have jury eliminations). I just don’t think Rudy can do the job he claims he is most qualified for in a leadership capacity. 9/11 is just too personal for him.

  • T Kay

“And to further declare Rudy Giuliani needs to be educated on September 11th when millions of people around the world saw him dealing with these terrorist attacks firsthand is just as absurd.”

Guiliani did a good job of orchestrating a disaster response, true.

But we should not confuse the ability to cope with a disaster after it happens with the ability to act in a way to avert disaster before it happens.

  • NH

Watch NH on the 5th. We’ll have 500 people outside holding signs.

If you’ve ever gotten the chance to meet Ron you’d think he had charisma..He’s a darling man. He was an ob/gyn remember! It takes trust to allow a doctor to do what he had to do to you if you are one of his patients!

However, who’d want to vote for someone who married his cousin the first time? (And has been married 3 times?)
Besides — he knows nothing about foreign policy and contradicts himself in every article I read where he is quoted.

  • NH

Rudy that is! Rudy knows nothing about foreign policy.

  • Ray Harmon

I don’t expect anyone to ever agree 100% with any books written concerning policy, but if the books are well written and researched then the objective facts should be well established: 9/11 Commission Report conclusions/CIA Testimonies/verified statements by the primary players, etc.

It’s the conclusions that matter. Intelligent people take in information and use their sense of reason to come up with some working methodology.

Individuals that view the objective facts and conclude that we are being attacked because we are “free” haven’t applied sound reasoning in reaching their conclusion.

  • Rich

To believe we were attacked because of how are women are dressed is absurd. Why in France women are on the beach topless you would think they would start there and their are plenty of free societies on the globe. Foreign Policy plays a role in all this.

  • tkc

Ron Paul has a point, but only to a certain extent. Osama may gripe about US troops in Saudi Arabia but maybe he should take that up with the king. Oh wait, Osama got exiled for being too much of a PITA.

So to say that US involvement in the middle east is driving fanatical jihad is only part of a much bigger story. Osama’s gripes against the west is a laundry list of just about everything under the sun. He even complains that we didn’t ratify the Kyoto accords on the environment. He complains that we do not follow the true path of Islam. We let our women run around half naked. So, in this fashion, Rudy is right, they do hate us for our freedoms.

The idea that if we just left well enough alone in the middle east then our terrorism problems would be solved is naive. Yet that seems to be where Dr. Paul is. I can’t get behind that.

  • Obadiah Plainman

Paul is right. Giuliani is NOT qualified to run anything larger than a city.

He’s not even qualified to run a home owner’s association.

Guiliani appeals to emotions, ignorance, and idiocy. Ron Paul appeals to intelligence and knowledge. Guiliani treats people as children, Paul treats people as adults capable of understanding a topic if provided with the background information.

  • John C.

So because Rudy was there in NY during 9/11 he’s suddenly an expert on foreign policy? If I see a car accident and call the paramedics, does that make me a trauma expert? Does it qualify me to design better tires or safer roads? No, it pretty much just means that I can use the telephone.

  • Travis E. Page

Rudy has chosen to make his message the most dumbed down simplest one possible. Good luck with that.

Paul is the only man in this ball game with honesty and integrity. You always know where you stand with him. With guys like Rudy, it doesn’t really matter one lick what he says now, because it will all change once he gets into office. Bush ran on a platform of “no nation building” around the world and he couldn’t have been more opposite.

  • Adam

I don’t agree with Paul when it comes to foreign policy…he’s not even close. But the more I watch him take on Rudy, the more Rudy looks like a liberal in sheeps clothing with really nothing to run on except his 9/11 leadership. I mean, does Rudy stand for anything at all besides 9/11? Rudy wouldn’t even be standing on the same stage as Paul if it wasn’t for the media attention he got because of 9/11. I just have an overall bad vibe about Giuliani. I may have to put him in the “will never vote for him” category with McCain.

I am glad that Ron Paul is doing this, he’s making Rudy respond to HIM. The other 8 candidates must be happy too; from a strategy p.o.v., if Ron can weaken Rudy’s STRONGEST point, he’s in trouble.

A lot of people seem to characterize non-intervention as “head in the sand” isolationism. I would suggest you read more of what Ron (and some others) have said about their position, it isn’t as naive as his detractors like to paint it as.

One small point though – I don’t agree that Rudy’s marrying his SECOND cousin is something to hold against him. It was legal. There are quite a few states where it is also legal to marry a first cousin.
Maybe it’s my anarchism/libertarianism, but I just don’t like attacks on someone’s LEGAL but controversial choice of marriage partner.
Believe me, Rudy has SO many negatives, that his first wife’s relation to him seems a very minor point.

Ron Paul is like fresh mountain air to a oxygen starved USA. He is like a cool mountain stream of water to a parched USA. Ron Paul is a real man not afraid to tell the truth. How totally refreshing is that? God Bless Ron Paul a real man not a robotic rehearsed neocon fake.

“Do not send your children to the University of Chicago where they will grow up to become warmongers like Wolfowitz or totalitarians like Ashcroft! The neo-con cabal, currently ruling America and in charge of pursuing the New World Order agenda is, according to Professors Drury and Boyle, “a tyranny of warmongers and unscrupulous elites from an intellectual and moral cesspool.”

What are the implications of this “New World Order”, or “Globalization” as it is now called? Richard K. Moore [17] writes: “The course of world events, for the first time in history, is now largely controlled by a centralised global regime. This regime has been consolidating power ever since World War II and is now formalising that power into a collection of centralised institutions and a new system of international ‘order’. Top western political leaders are participants in this global regime, and the strong Western nation state is rapidly being dismantled and destabilised. The global regime serves elite corporate interests exclusively. It has no particular regard for human rights, democracy, human welfare, or the health of the environment. The only god of this regime is the god of wealth accumulation. Just a taste of this matrix of evil!!

Fox News Alert. Breaking Story. This just in: Right wing christian america wakes up and has found out that a shadow goverment was behind 9/11 and the Iraq war.

News Flash. Previous story bogas. We have reports they are still sheeple watching american idol. And are still waiting for those weapons of mass deception to explode!!

  • http://libertypapers Joseph dicarlo

The american populus has had very little to say about how it will be governed at anytime by its collective branches of government . Politicians do not have to answer to the people , neither for negligence , or blatant abuse of office power.
It has been perpetrated on the sheeple as PAT refers to them countless times. like minded friends .. the fact is one that is simple to understand ..80% of the sheeple that makes up the the population is not interested in participating in daily grind politics ,it give them a headache.
Likely they prefer three weeks of ANNA NICHOLE (OR NICOLE )ad naseum. Christ dieing in these times would not generate that sort of interest . Having written as much ..the situations is as follows .
Americans vote , at least the ones who do; then they go on vacation for four years and expect that the selfserving well educated rich class will serve their interest a Laughable concept.
Giuliani would literally come apart at the seams if during a debate he would be challenged to explain his governance pre 9/11 during 9/11 and post 9/11 .Anthony DePalma`s article in the International herald tribune is a must read for all people who are delusional about the ability of this man to govern . Ron Paul is an unattainable dream for america , even though he is representative of its ideals , i will vote for him because the alternative is not to vote. But let us face the facts ..Amrican like the devil they know; moreover they are so used to getting screwed in tiny increments : from loss of right to loss of freedom ,, thy remain largely uninformed about such things as the North American Treaty. Operation Northwoods, Tonken Gulf ( i was in the Army then ) The PANC . and on and on. The sheeple are happy with watching Amrican idol instead of paying attention to the thieves that they have been left behind to mind the store while they vacation. Lets face it Americans do love politician lovemaking style NO LUBRICANT OF ANY KIND AT ALL. The bought and paid for media
on all accounts is on their side. Bring them down first then possibly the American people will have a chance at changing anything . Being a patriot is more than wrapping oneself in the flag .. i served my time .

I hope future debates show who knows their stuff. We need to weed out the ignorant candidates. Rudy is a decent orator but he lacks in the knowledge department.

Pat, David Griffin is a transnationalist who believes in Global Governance. HE IS PART OF THE NEW WORLD ORDER (rolls eyes).

Ron Paul doesn’t believe in this 9/11 truth inside job stuff.

If your an idiot celebrity you get attention but if your an American Patriot you don’t. The soldiers fighting don’t get the recognition they deserve. We pick the wrong people to listen to in this society.

Dr. Paul’s press conference and suggested reading list for Rudy is a brilliant move, as this post suggests. Thanks for the quotes showing how the Giuliani is left twisting in the wind as a result!

What most commentators on this story have missed is perhaps bigger and more important news, though. And that is the story about the man who was standing by Dr. Paul’s side at the press conference yesterday.

    Thanks Eric.
Here is my concern, Juliani has been preped as the next up and comming NWO pupet. It is quite obvious he lacks any kind of real intellect. His fuse is to short and when asked about this nations pryorities? He qiuckly quipped terrorism and global economy. Way to tip your and there Rudy!!

That being said, my worst fears are either this gop primary, or the main election, these monsters{Brezinski,Kissinger}are goin to orchestrate a 2nd 911 . Bush has already been shot down on this false flag operation. Brezinski already stated this in Jan-07 and the TL and CFR has backed it up earlier this month. I will refresh:
If and when a 2nd 911{possibly a dirt bomb linked to Russia} occurs, Bush will use it to go to war with Iran. However Brezinski stated Al-Qaeda will carry it out and it would be a flase flag operation.

Iran is our next war ..defacto the PANC REPORT. Then review the televised speaches of the past five years , you will find that the soudbytes are taken literally from it. Prior to and post 9/11 whom do you knpow personally who referred to our country as the homeland? Nobody it was anything but ,, usa, N# 1 ,the world, the states .. homeland ? the nazi furher coined for Germany the fatherland. To produce a viable dirty bomb one needs technology ,it doesn`t develop by chance in a cave in Afghanistan over some dried lizard dinner party . There is however a never ending supply of spent uranium floating about in the way of ammunition to be pulverianzed and released in the air we breathe to make many people wish they never heard of it. Take notice of the New pearl harbor adoption as relates to 9/11.. coincidence ? Read page 51 of PNAC metaphor ? or incindiary . Those pesky Japanese put one over on us even though we already had broken their cypher code system .. do i think it was wrong to nuclearize (NUKULARIZE as our illiterate leaders prefer to enunziate) No .. irrespective of the near surrender of the Japanese empire it remain a fact that one must annialate his or her enemy absolutely and completely and so it was done . So whatever the enemy of the people might be foreign or “DOMESTIC” IT MUST BE VANQUISHED UTTERLY AND ABSOLUTELY. The media is numero uno . Because it is the foremost traitor of the american populus . It betrays us daily by omission of relevant issues , it no longer attacks lies or propagandists. Inceptionally it was given freedom for the premise that it would defend the common man from injustices when no politician or despot would rise to that occasion . The mainsteram media has made it possible by treasonable intention to segment the people making them pursue blind avenues , unresolveable
yet to each americam the pet peave of the day.
Let every body focus first on beating down the media once it is reasonably unbiased we will all know the truth about many things that remain hidden from view.
If another act of terrorism occurs in this beloved country of ours no matter how minor or great it will not be bacause no moneys or agencies were ill funded before 9/11 or post 9/11.. . Listen to speaches you are being told what will happen next irrespective of what you give up in liberty or rights or tax dollar but evem more expensive ” LIVES” . If any one is delusional enough to believe that cave duellers can foil the most sophisticated security system in the world NORAD CIA FBI OSI NSA NDS DOD AND the litany of entities that tax dollars fund could fill the pages of a phone book , if that is what people believe and are afraid of then give up .. to the lies .Those who give up freedom and rights for security deserve neither.

We can fight the terrorist that have been “created” without ever leaving our shores it has been done many times WW2 is a lasting example, and when an ordinary employee of a computer chain store can do it ask yourselves What the @!%#$!@#)__)%^$% are we paying for? it will take a long time to beat up our politicians into honest servitude of the people , much longer if we don`t beat the press into a pulp to then make it serve the interest of the people as it was intened to serve.
Long live our beloved yet emasculated constitution.
Foot note we have laws enough to run perhaps a dozen countries ,perhaps its time for congress to go on vacation for a dozen years and make no new laws which they have no intention to enforce especially about non natives.
