Not that Chertoff will be a step up. Frankly, I think “incompetence”, “unquestioning”, and “willing to do his master’s bidding” are the only qualifications for any Bush appointee these days regardless of the office. Robert Gates appears to be the only one who slipped through the cracks, and I’ve noticed that Bush hasn’t been putting him in front of the press much these days.
