Because playing up homophobia is one of the linchpins of the Republican leadership’s strategy for pandering to the GOP’s alleged base, and stopping corruption is not. It’s okay by them if one of their guys steals hundreds of millions of dollars from the taxpayers in entitlements (Stevens) or creates self-serving legislation that makes insurance companies refuse to sell insurance in his state (Trent Lott) or has the occasional heterosexual indiscretion where he cheats on his wife (Gingrich, Guiliani, McCain, Vitter, Dole, Burton, Warner, and good old Strom Thurmond). Blatant theft and gouging are okay…but if one of them goes cruising for dick in a bathroom, he’s off the island because to the religious “base” homosexuality is obviously much worse than theft (even though “Thou shalt not be gay” didn’t make it into the Ten Commandments and “Thou shalt not steal” did). Of course, the GOP only does that because they think that religious people are too stupid not to realize the complete hypocrisy in this. Their track record of success before the last election, sadly, shows that they’re probably not wrong.
