Guy’s right. God helps those who help themselves. Fifteen years Sept 26. I don’t drink because I don’t want to die in such a dismal fashion. I’m more afriad of getting drunk again and doing harm to some innocent than I am afriad of doing harm to myself, because I am a bad mother fucker and an expert with firearms. I have been known, while totally drunk, to shoot the radiators and windshields out of an entire fleet of trucks. I don’t want to do that again, because there might be someone sitting in one of the trucks the next time. I prefer to deal with reality on its own terms than create a delusional reality where I once again become a very professional menace to society. I like sobriety, and AA helped get me there after a stint in a great rehab program. Maybe I’m one of the ten percenters. I surely hope so.

There was a very good episode of South Park about AA. I thought the 12 steps in the episode was a joke until I googled it. My conclusion was very similar to yours: AA is a cult (or mind rape if you prefer). This was also the point Matt Stone and Trey Parker tried to make in the South Park episode.

My biggest problem with AA is this notion that an individual has no control over his or her actions without the help of a higher power (I would be bothered and offended by this even if I wasn’t an atheist). The idea that someone could be court ordered to join this mind raping cult is even more troubling.

Since watching the episode and doing the research, I have made it a point to write about AA and 12 step programs. It seems you did such a good job of identifying the problem that I no longer feel the need to write an exhaustive treatise. I will instead write a shorter post directing my readers to your post from my blog. Good work Chris!

The relapse rate climbs back to about 65% by the third try, and if they haven’t got it by then, the numbers fall off dramatically, to the point where someone in their 4th or 5th visit to rehab has nearly a 100% relapse rate.

So what you’re saying is Lindsey Lohan is either going to be forced into a convent or end up as a crack whore? ;-)
