While I certainly don't want to acquit this White House of hucksterism, I think the original poster is pretty much on point here. The Democrats aren't proposing to withdraw from Iraq any more than the Republicans are. At best, they are disagreeing over the time-table for a REDUCTION in U.S. troops. I have not seen anything that indicates that any major candidate of either party doesn't foresee a situation in which some American troops remain in Iraq indefinitely just as they have in South Korea.

There are no strategic differences in the thinking of the leading candidates of either party or of the White House. The argument is still over tactics. Our absolutely senseless Middle Eastern policy is not an issue here.

Once I read the first sentence about "the way forward", it was clear that this would be one-sided analysis trying to appear as impartial.

While its true that the President can develop a dreamscape of what is to be, history shows us that this president has no intention of delivering. Clearly, any good huckster can lay out a detailed scam that promises "a chicken in every pot." This scam artist has the audacity to tell those same people that they aren't hungry as they've eaten the imaginary chicken.

The Republican Party as well as the President has shown repeatedly that it has no stomach for Democracy, whether in America or Iraq. This is the party that sought to bring us a permanent one-party system ruled by a malevolent authoritarian leader.

Any one who loves liberty would surely see the evil of living under such conditions.

Any way, I'm tired of children who makes messes and expect someone else to clean it up.

The problem for the Democrats is that they have a lot of internal disagreements that they have not hammered out yet, and Mr. Reed, speaking for the entire party, was not authorized to present any particular proposal.

The major difference between the two, it seems to me, is that Mr. Bush is proposing to permit the surge troops to come home, which was pretty much required by the Army's own rest requirements, while the Democrats would like to bring home the troops sooner than that. Mr. Bush offers no plan for reducing the troops below the 130,000 level, while the Democrats are talking about substantial troop reductions before the elections.

But I heartily second the comment above asserting that Iraq will simply revert to another dictatorship upon our departure. Nothing we can do will change that. All we can control is the timing of that ultimate outcome.

The major point I think, which you allude, is that where President Bush offers several paragraphs worth of plans, the Democrats offer one sentence sound bites.
