George Will On Ron Paul

by Doug Mataconis

A sign that the campaign, and more importantly the long ignored libertarian wing of the GOP, is starting to be taken seriously inside the beltway:

  1. George Will is the best example of how ridiculous the “MSM conspiracy” nuts are with their stupid allegations. He’s been plugging Paul since last year, on TV and in his column in Newsweek. Good clip.

  2. “nuts” and “stupid” are needless and crass words that you consistently throw out there, i think partly just to keep a form of antagonism alive.

and once again i point to foxnews and their treatment of RP. oh and by the way i will also throw redstate.com and townhall.com out there, although townhall and their new-right readership seems to be somewhat calming down.

if you want a REAL virulent, hardcore anti-RP site, try lonestartimes.com

  3. Crass my remarks may be…but accurate. The media doesn’t conspire, they simply offer a product and attempt to sell it to the market most attracted to that product like any other business. Their product just happens to be news and until recently Ron Paul wasn’t considered news.

FoxNews caters to people with neo-conservative and populist views, which are generally incompatible with libertarianism. That, combined with the fact that Paul hasn’t bought a lot of advertising from them and that not that many people outside the Internet have heard of him, is why they’ve largely ignored Ron Paul…because he’s not a product they think sells to their customer base, not some active conspiracy to keep him down. That’s changed in the last month as his profile has risen somewhat because he’s now a commodity they can sell to their viewers. Before he wasn’t, and that should have been obvious to anyone actually paying attention.

I use the words “stupid” and “nuts” because I don’t have a lot of respect for people who think private businesses or individuals owe them a forum for their views. I don’t respect people who claim to care about freedom and individual choice, but somehow think those ideals don’t apply to news networks (which are private businesses) because for some reason they think newscasters have some obligation to ignore their own self interest and profit…I consider it a form of blatant and easily recognizable hypocrisy. And I don’t respect unsubstantiated allegations of active conspiracies by people whose political view is almost entirely formed by a mentality of victimization and persecution by the rest of the world.

Frankly, the “MSM conspiracy” folks need to correct these ideologic failings if they want me to respect their opinions and I’ve got no problem pointing this out to them in as brutally honest a fashion as possible because frankly I think the antagonism is often the only thing that sinks through with them. That may make me a bit childish or even an asshole at times, but then I’ve never claimed to be the epitome of perfect manners and I believe that all of my points and criticisms are valid.

That said, I can’t stand Fox News either and I think the anti-Ron Paul sites are generally run by people just as deluded as the people I’ve dressed down here. I’ve heard most of the criticisms, I’ve voiced a few of my own, but Paul has addressed most of them over time, I think he’s still the best candidate in the race by far, and he’s still got my vote.

  4. UCrawford,

George Will has not been “plugging” Ron Paul. He has,in a very underhanded way, been calling Ron Paul naive and his constitutional views silly.

George Will does not agree with Ron Paul. George Will is a big government Conservative who apparently believe that the Constitution is an idea whose time has passed. George disdainfully labels Paul a “cheerful anachronism” This is not a compliment.
Do not believe for a moment that he supports Ron Paul.
