I agree that Robertson is basically being an opportunist. He expects Giuliani to win and he's jumping on the bandwagon. He's also reflecting the views of the neo-con movers and shakers in Washington.

But how close is he to the grassroots? Could he wind up being the odd man out? What happens if Giuliani doesn't win the nomination? The Beltway-based neocons have lots of influence within the conservative media, but they don't command the loyalty of the conservative man in the street.

And what happens if Giuliani does win the nomination and the other religious conservatives bolt the party as they have threatened to do? Pat Robertson could well wind up being alienated from his traditional sources of support.

At any rate, I can't see this coalition surviving a Clinton Administration. The GOP is in disarray and only the hope of staying in power is keeping the disparate factions from engaging in open warfare. Once this election is lost, the real battle for control of the Republican Party will begin. Only a thorough purge of the neo-cons and their allies can save the GOP from total ruin.

"So the future of the GOP, in the eyes of Pat Robertson and Rudy Giuliani is fairly easy to see — New York style authoritarianism combined with evangelical Christianist fatalism."

And the Democrats will be running Walter Mondale in a skirt. Just great.

Please notice: Pat Robertson, who said something equivalent to: "America was attacked because we deserved it", has endorsed Rudy. Ron Paul did not say America deserved to be attacked. It would seem that Rudy *HAS* heard something like what he was falsely claiming Ron Paul had said. He just didn't remember ?? Isn't it strange that Rudy has no problem with Pat Robertson's endorsement? Does Rudy have a problem with his memory and his hearing? I do not think Rudy is presidential. I think Ron Paul would be the best president since our founding fathers. His views are spot on for our present predicament. Truth remains truth, even this many years later.

Rudy "9/11" Giuliani: a prostitute...

Prolific Hit & Run commentator joe (an avowed liberal) put it best:

The common thread is Patriarchy.

Christian conservative, strong executive, empire, law and order - the details don't matter.

Big Daddy fighting the bad guys, and it doesn't really matter who Big Daddy is. Rudy Guiliani does the best impersonation Generalissimo Franco, and that's all that matters.

I agree with him about roughly 98%.
