Amish don't have the internet? Since when? The Amish are just as big of hypocrites as anyone.

Battery powered tools don't count as electrical.

Can own farm implements, just can't use them, so hire some English to do it for you.

Own the van, ride in the van, just don't drive the van. Hire someone to drive you and your friends/family to the local Aldi's to stock up on cheap canned goods.

Internet/telephone? We ain't got no stinkin' internet (not in the house at least, but if you take a short stroll out into the middle of the west field, where that "outhouse" is, you might find the exit ramp for the information superhighway.)

I’m sure they’ll realize the mules aren’t as efficient as other means, eventually though.

That may not be the case. If the supply of petroleum is truly limited and we can't figure out a way to match its incredible energy characteristics, we need its price to skyrocket specificaly to discourage from expending it where effective alternatives exist.

From a purely utilitarian perspective, it makes absolutely no difference when those alternatives were discovered/invented. The future may very well look a lot like the past. Hopefully that's not the case, but it's a distinct possibility.

Technically, they are just choosing a different option in the market, which had the incentive of not costing as much as fuel.

I'm sure they'll realize the mules aren't as efficient as other means, eventually though. It's a shame something like solar power isn't developed enough to prevent some from using mules.

It is a bit of a facepalm, however :\
