Brad, the problem is that when the Delta Queen cannot be run profitable, she'll soon be rotting away somewhere. And for operating her as a day excursion boat you'll need to completely rebuild her, ripping out the staterooms etc. which will make a totally different boat out of her. What makes her unique and what makes her so valuable as a piece of American history is that she is an overnight passenger vessel.

Regarding the GENERAL SLOCUM: Rep. Oberstar has even chosen a very bad example - the SLOCUM was a day excursion boat, not an overnight passenger vessel lik the Delta Queen. Hence, the SLOCUM could still run today with her wooden structure and Rep. Oberstar couldn't do a thing about it. The Safety at Sea Act only effects overnight passenger vessels.

It's that simple. Oberstar, with all respect, has no idea what he is talking about. He's just misusing his power for what ever obscure reasons are hiding behind his safety arguments.

One point (to Jo Ann and others),

This change wouldn't relegate the Delta Queen to the dust bin, necessarily. It would force them to stop operating overnight cruises, which may conceivably destroy the profitability of the boat. But with the new regs, the boat would be available for day trips.

Which doesn't change my opinion of the situation, but I don't want to overstate it.

Well said. Now if we could just get our nations people to rise up and let their Congressmen know that they feel this National Historic Landmark needs to be allowed to continue to run maybe we could save her for future generations. As it is today she's going to be gone forever from our inland rivers, where for decades folks young and old have rushed to the riverbank to wave when she goes by. After 15 trips on her I can assure you are safer on her than in your own bed. SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN!!!!! Call your Representative and Senator today!
