War we are regretting? What do the American people even know about war? They aren't stopping their grease-infatuations because of rational thought or knowledge about the subject, but because antiwar sentiment is popular just like buying whole wheat. All the American voter takes in is garbage from media sources, and so he talks garbage, thinks garbage, and votes garbage. The 2000, 04, and 08 elections are the strongest arguments for platonic despotism I've seen- and I fear that when the time comes the American people will throw up there last rights for some stability, and their "guardian" will be no more ideal then those they have elected.

Americans vote like we eat?! The rest of that analogy I have no problem with, but part of the problem is that Americans are, apparently, too busy eating to vote. Otherwise, Americans do tend to treat voting like eating. They do the same things over and over, expecting different results, and they completely forget to think ahead of time about the consequences of their actions. This would explain both the obesity rate and the war we are regretting now.

Except that they don’t.

Yes, they do. Voter satisfaction is very low. Apathy is high. The just don't realize that their pet issues contribute to the problem.

Most people understand that the current system is significantly flawed

Except that they don't. They all have their little pet issues that they wish were handled in a manner more befitting their own preferences, but I stand by my analogy - they're looking for health food, they're in the right place, and perhaps with the exception of being out of a certain cut of free-range, grass-fed beef, they feel right at home.

For libertarians, it’s like going into Cracker Barrel for health food. For most, depending on one’s taste for a particular flavor of statism, it’s like going into Whole Foods trying to find health food.

I think Brad's analogy is spot on. Most people understand that the current system is significantly flawed and when you talk to them about libertarian beliefs, they'll nod in agreement. The hard thing is to get them to adhere to those beliefs consistently. Most people lack that discipline, just as they lack the discipline to forgo the country breakfast that they know in their mind to be unhealthy.
