Whatever happened to freedom of choice and wasn't the civil war to end forced labor (so we are told)I think the Pharaohs of Egypt required forced "communnity service" in order to build their pyrimids. The new liberal spin for forced labor--community service yes, it sounds so much better. Just like it's patriotic to pay more taxes. I hope Hap Holden is at the head of the line for this one

They don't have to make it mandatory. They just have to make the alternatives completely undesirable. Think of it like the 55mph speed limit. As a state, you didn't have to set the speed limit at 55 but if you wanted federal funding you had to. Do the same with higher education. Tell the colleges that if they want federal dollars then they have to 'set a goal' of having a large percentage of their student body doing some sort of community service. If the colleges don't do it then they don't get the funds. Since the collegs will want the funds they'll make sure that their students will do the time. Sure, it is voluntary, but if you don't play along you'll be cut off.
I'm not saying this is a good idea. I'm just saying that is the easiest way to do it. Technically, you'll have a choice. The reality will be that you won't.

Hap Holden,

It's not incentive, it's forcing you to do something. You can't force someone to make themselves better, that's a choice they have to make on their own, not be forced into it by a government program. I agree with Brad, this is very scary considering he's not in office yet. Obama Youth anyone?

Look, a mandate to perform community service removes your right to chose to do community service. You become a convict, required to perform such duties in exchange for ... (reduced time/reduced fees) and eventually for the mere right to apply for government aid at all.

That's not to say that an extra $4k isn't nice, but by the time these kids get to college, $4k won't cover 2 months of tuition.

"No" to government mandates!

Scary? Abosolutely. Because this is the history of Mr Obama's youth organizing.

Here is the text:

Public Allies is a Barack Obama Racist Socialist Army
Posted on September 5, 2008 at 7:47 pm (PST)

Public Allies is a Chicago organization of tax payer funded protesters. Barack Obama founded Public Allies in Chicago in 1992, and Michelle Obama became the executive director. The group uses tax payer dollars to pay people who sign up. The Public Allies paid members spend most of their time protesting. Public Allies teaches the young adults that work for them that America is a racist, oppressive place in need of "social change." Public Allies said in a tax filing:
"Our alumni are more than twice as likely as 18-34 year olds to engage in protest activities."
A graduate of the 2005 Los Angeles Public Allies class, Nelly Nieblas, says it’s just a lot of talk about race. It’s a lot of talk about sexism, a lot of talk about homophobia, a lot of talk about isms and phobias. One of those isms is heterosexism, heterosexism, which a Public Allies training seminar in Chicago remember, founding member, Barack Obama. Executive director, Michelle Obama, in Chicago. That’s their chapter. A Public Allies training seminar in Chicago describes heterosexism as a negative byproduct of capital quoting of capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy and male dominated privilege, end quote. By the way, your tax dollars now fund about half of Public Allies’ expenses, through Bill Clinton’s AmeriCorps. Obama wants to fully fund it and expand it to a national program some say will cost $500 billion.
The information above is just a taste of what the radical socialist teachings that Public Allies promotes. Investor’s Business Daily wrote a much more complete article on the topic. Click here to read it.
After 19 months of Obama running for President, you’d think the mainstream media could have dug this information up, and they probably did, but didn’t share it with anyone else. With Sarah Palin, they dumped an avalanche of rumors, lies, and scandal over her head in only 5 days, and she’s still standing with her head held high. Sarah isn’t making the same excuses that Obama did when he got a few questions he didn’t like. Sarah has answered every question with honesty, and hasn’t tried to hide anything. Obama could learn something from her.
When Obama, Biden, McCain, and Palin square off for the Presidential debates, I’m hoping someone has the guts to ask Obama about his Public Allies organization.
Click here to read the Boot Camp for Radicals article by IBD.
In the video above, Obama says his “community organizing” tells people about where he is coming from, and who he represents. Obama represents Public Allies, a group of racist socialists, who are paid by American taxpayers to protest. If that is the accomplishment he is so proud of, what will he do as President of the United States? The answer is in Public Allies. The video above came out on September 4, which is the same day that Investor’s Business Daily published the truth about Public Allies. What Obama claims Public Allies does in the video, is completely untrue. Obama never mentions what Public Allies really does, because if he did, most people would see him as a radical socialist who wants to start a bloody revolution.

Yes, Andrew. I suggest you call for impeachment on inauguration day.

How dare a President provide incentive to a young person so that he can a) better his community and b) better himself.

Oh, what a slippery slope. Good thing I'm wearing my fear repellent today.

Scary?? YES, absolutely!! When the government, or anyone else for that matter, MANDATES that you must do anything it is a violation of your right to Liberty. It is especially scary when they mandate that you do something under the pretense of volunteering (working without compensation), even if they do give you $4k in the end. They want people to think they are rewarding selflessness when they are actually depending on selfishness to get people to sign up. This hypocrisy is part of the scariness. The rest of it is that this is yet ANOTHER government program which always functions economically like a subsidy, decreasing the efficiency of our overall economy and driving us more into our wonderful little recession.

Change we can believe in (...to only make the situation worse...). Obama! Obama! Obama!
