That was the day that Nixon officially took America off the gold standard (or whatever false approximation of a gold standard we had under Bretton Woods).

It ended even a cursory belief in sound money, and really allowed us to open the floodgates of inflation. The dollar has dropped roughly 80% in value since that time.
