It might be one thing if he went after real criminals; he seems to focus on victimless vice crimes (i.e. drugs, prostitution, etc.). I’ll never forget the time that his deputies broke the law in the biggest prostitution sting the county ever had (and Sherrif Joe couldn’t quite understand why the AG had to drop charges because his own deputies dropped their pants!)

I’m just glad to live far enough away that I don’t have to hear about “America’s Toughest Sherrif” on an almost daily basis anymore.

it’s because he cracks down on teh dirty brown people. They also love tent city. I worked with a guy who spent time in tent city, and he always talked about how bad it was, but he always talked about how much he admired Arpaio for making it so rough. Arizonans are also very law and order types. So they just don’t care about what Arpaio does, as long as he tough on crime. It’s kind of strange, because there are also still a lot of the frontier spirit out here, lots of “leave the hell alone” types, but they are outnumbered by the law and order types. How else would McCain keep getting elected?
