In past interviews, Mr. Chan has seemed fairly intelligent to me. I can imagine this being subtle irony on his part. Then again, it might have been governmental appeasement while in China, or simply an accurate statement of his perspective.

One would probably have to ask him to know.

Without further information, I guess I have to assume it’s an accurate statement of his perspective – in which case my assessment of his intelligence will change.

He likes freedom of speech for himself. It must be burdensome for him to do as he pleases and be a famous movie star. Is he alluding to the fact that he desires to be a slave so he can find “happiness in slavery.”

I have seen it suggested that Mr. Chan might have been being clever and subtle…would most people in China prefer the lifestyle of Hong Kong or Taiwan? Could this be an intentionally bad piece of propaganda?
