By the time Mangum was exposed as a liar, the media’s ‘rich white male jocks rape poor, defenseless, black woman’ template no longer worked and the media lost interest in the story (though some gave at least some passing mention of her past before moving on to the next story). Curiously, Al Sharpton was also nowhere to be found.** First, her name was exposed well before the mainstream media exposed it. Radio talk show host Tom Leykis revealed her name in the third hour of his April 21, 2006 show, almost a full year before almost all of the mainstream news networks revealed her name. Granted, he, with his then 3-million viewer audience, wasn't exactly a household name in terms of news sources, but he was the first to release her name and did so only about a month into the case. Second, Al Sharpton wasn't the only person conspicuously absent in the aftermath of the players' being declared innocent.
