I do get leery when the flat tax goes with no loopholes. That last time loopholes were closed, somehow they only effected the middle class and below.

My point would be 40% is too much for ANYONE to pay. Personally, I think anything over 10% is too high.

I’m opposed to the income tax but as long as we are stuck with it, why can’t we have one flat rate?

Actually, I don’t believe that at all. I get the sense that those outside the 40% income tax bracket believe that it is those above who don’t work as hard, which is what I am trying to dispell.

There are a lot of folks in the middle who trudge through 40-hour work weeks and watch the clock every day waiting for 5 PM on Friday. There are a lot of extremely hard-working people below who are busting their asses at hard physical tasks 50+ hours a week, grabbing every overtime hour they can get, to make a buck. I’m not trying in any way to belittle them. It’s unfortunate that they work in jobs with low market value, but it’s not in any way a disparagement of the amount of work they put in.

But those at the top are often looked at as a leisure class, and it’s just not true. Most people in high income brackets are working jobs where 40 hours a week is a starting point, not the total. Most are in high-stress positions where they need to make decisions that make or break the jobs of many workers beneath them. Most form a critical path in their job function, and work through weekends, evenings, and even vacations because nobody else can make the decisions they make.

I’m not one to make a claim that those of low income don’t work hard. But there are quite a few who believe that those of high income are just “fortunate”, and that they don’t work nearly as hard as the average Joe Sixpack. It’s just not true.

“Automatic witholding” is perhaps the most evil-genius concept ever invented.

Where else would people – having been robbed of 40% of their earnings – dance with joy and happiness to recover 10-20% of what was stolen from them?

Want to make your teen a Conservative? Sign them up for a part-time job and set their witholding to “exempt.” Every week, when they get paid, confiscate the proper percentage for “Taxes.” Show them the calculations, compare it to YOUR check – so they understand what you’re doing.
