I agree. As a general rule, I think Republicans have pushed harder on the drug war than Democrats. And clearly Bush was a hypocrite, having [allegedly] used some pretty hard stuff back in the day prior to his reformation.

But the difference about it is that he came into office without anyone thinking he’d be different. Nobody thought he’d be offering a more reasoned response to drug policy.

Not so with Obama. He said he’d respect state choices with regards to medical marijuana, but he’s still letting the feds harass dispensaries. His deputy, Gil Kerlikowski (sp?), said that we were going to change the entire concept of the “war on drugs”. But what Obama advertised, he never followed through on.

Bush said “I had youthful indiscretions” like they were bad events from his past. So nobody is surprised he’s anti-drug now. Obama said he used to have “weed, and maybe a little blow” like he’s a cool motherfucker. But if anyone else wants to be cool like Barack, you should be harassed by the law-man, right?

Penn Jillette? Not a Republican. He’s a Libertarian who says he supports Gary Johnson for president.

The Liberty Papers staff? Some of us may be *registered* Republican for strategic reasons (I registered Republican solely to vote for Ron Paul in the Colorado caucus) but as a practical matter, we are libertarians of varying degrees (we have at least one anarchist on staff). I can’t speak for the others but I plan to vote for Gary Johnson in the general election.

If you are still not convinced about where we stand on the war on (some) drugs, I would encourage you to search our archives. I think you will find that we have been at least as hard on Republicans as we have been Democrats.
